MAGIC: THE GATHERING
Niedługo po naszym przyjeździe do Malezji w listopadzie, podczas chodzenia po wielkim centrum handlowym MidValley Mega Mall natknęliśmy się na sklep Comics Mart. Obok komiksów, figurek bohaterów komiksów i innych kolekcjonerskich tego typu gadżetów, sklep specjalizuje się również w grze Magic: the Gathering (MTG). Sprzedają karty i wszelkie inne rekwizty mniej lub bardziej potrzebne, do grania w tą właśnie grę. Organizują też co tygodniowe turnieje i codziennie można tam zajrzeć i pogadać z fanami czy też nawet rozegrać kilka rund bo zawsze ktoś tam będzie z kim można zagrać.
Shortly after we arrived in Malaysia in November, during our visit at a very big MidValley Mega Mall we found a shop Comics Mart. They sell comics, comic figurines and any other similar gadget you can think of, but they also specialise in Magic: the Gathering (MTG) game. They sell cards and anything you may need to play the game. They organise weekly tournaments as well. You can also come any time and play with anyone who might be also there and fancies a game or two. A real paradise for MTG fans.
Gra Magic the Gathering (MTG) jest kolekcjonerską grą karcianą. Piotrek w czasach młodości grał w tą grę jeszcze w Polsce. Jak znów zobaczył karty w Comics Mart postanowił na nowo wciągnąć się w MTG. Wiąże się to ze sporymi kosztami bo trzeba zbudować sobie deck czyli talię kart, która będzie nadawała się do tego żeby nią grać i przede wszystkim wygrywać. Trzeba wydać sporo pieniędzy aby zestawić sobie taką talię kart która będzie składała się z 'mocnych' kart. Aby zestawić talię/decka, zaczyna się od wstępnego zestawu do którego potem dokupuje się boostery czyli dodatkowe karty. Talia musi składać się z 60 kart, lub więcej. Jak już zbudujesz mocną talię, masz też setki innych kart które możesz lub nie, wykorzystać w przyszłości czy też możesz, lub nie, sprzedać je komuś... powstaje więc całkiem niezła kolekcja kart.
MTG game is a collectible cards game. Piotr, in his youth, used to play the game in Poland. When he saw the cards and MTG gadgets at Comics Mart he decided to start playing again. It involves pretty high costs as you need to build a deck of cards but it has to be a proper deck you can play with and, of course, win. You need to spend a lot of money to build a strong deck. To do this, you need to buy an introductory pack of cards and then buy additional booster packs. Each deck needs to be of minimum 60 cards. You get to the point that you have a deck of 60 cards but you also end up with hundreds of other cards, that you may or may not need in future and may or may not sell them to others... so quite a collection.
Każda karta wygląda mniej więce podobnie. Każda ma swoją nazwę, wizerunek, opis i co potrafi, w tym na przykład ile szkody potafi wyrządzić albo też ile szkody gracz dostanie poprzez jej użycie.
Each card looks more or less the same. Each card has its own name, a picture, description including what it does in the game, and also how much damage it can do to the opponent and also how much damage a player can get by using it in the game.
Gra najczęściej odbywa się między dwoma osobami, każdy używa własnej talii. Każda gra reprezentuje walkę pomiędzy czarownikami, którzy używają magii, czarów i fantazyjnych kreatur a to wszystko odzwierciedlane jest na kartach w talii i celem jest pokonanie przeciwnika. Każda karta ma jakąś funkcję, są karty mocne i są karty słabe i jest sporo zasad których trzeba się nauczyć. Piotrek wszystkie pamięta do dziś, próbował mnie uczyć grać ale to nie dla mnie. Karty których Piotrek nie potrzebuje lądują u Mayki żeby mogła się nimi pobawić, jako że czasami chce się bawić tymi od Piotrka, ważniejszymi.
Co jakiś czas Piotrek kupuje nowe rozszerzenia, boostery i kart jest coraz to więcej. Do grania używa jednej czy dwóch talii a reszta kolekcji jest dla posiadania i większość z nich siedzi w albumie, czasem się wymienia z innymi graczami, a czasem sprzedaje bądź kupuje pojedyncze karty za gotówkę.
The game is between two players, each player uses his own deck. Each game represents a battle between powerful wizards who use magic, cast spells and fantastic creatures depicted on individual cards to defeat their opponent. Each card has a function; there are weak cards and strong cards and there are a lot of rules as well. Piotr remembers everything and didn’t have a problem coming back to the game. He tried to teach me how to play MTG but it’s not my cup of tea. The cards he doesn’t need in his collection, he gives to Maya to play with, as she sometimes wants to grab some of his own, the more important ones.
From time to time Piotr buys new booster packs and the card collection keeps growing. For playing he uses one or two decks he built, but the rest of the cards have no other purpose than lying on the table or in the album. Sometimes he trades them for other cards, and sometimes he sells them for cash, and also buys new individual cards for cash as well.
Ostatnio Piotrek zabrał się za stworzenie aplikacji na iPhone, iPod i iPad. Aplikacja nazywa się iMTG - pomocnik dla graczy w MTG.
Pierwszą jej funkcją jest licznik życia (life counter). Grając w MTG każdy z graczy ma X żyć i w zależności od tego co dzieje się w grze, traci te życia, pojedynczo bądź po kilka. Aby się nie pogubić gracze używają zwykłych kostek do gry co pomaga zapamiętać komu ile żyć zostało.
Aplikacja iMTG ułatwia sprawę i gracze mogą sobie ustawiać ilośc pozostałych życ właśnie tutaj używając iPhona bądź iPada. Znajduje się tu też baza danych kart MTG i pomocnik do składania talii. Ostatnim uaktualnieniem aplikacji jest to że można zrobić zdjęcie karty (zeskanować) iPhonem czy iPadem, i od razu aplikacja wyszuka w bazie danych tą kartę, z jej szczegółami, ile jest warta itp.

Recently Piotr decided to create an applciation for iPhone/iPod/iPad. The application is called iMTG - a helper for MTG players.
The main function of the app is life counter. Players during the game usually have X lives and depending on what is going on in the game, they loose lives, one by one or a few at a time. To keep count and not get confused, the players use standard play cubes.
The iMTG app makes life easier for players and they can easily keep track of each others’ lives during the game, using their iPhone or iPod. The app also has a card database and a deck builder. The latest update is the app can take photo/scan the card and then do automatic search of this particular card in the card database, showing the card’s details, how much it is worth, etc.

Na dzień dzisiejszy Piotrek jeździ grać na turnieje w weekendy. W Mega Mall bywa coraz rzadziej a naczęściej zagląda do Comics Corner w Subang Jaya, jakieś 15 min samochodem od nas. Czasami to my z Mayą go zawozimy, a same jedziemy gdzieś na zakupy albo do Figloraju poszaleć. Pod wieczór odbieramy go i czasami wyskakujemy gdzieś na obiad po drodze.
Kart nazbierało się tyle że najprawdopodobniej będziemy mieć nadwagę wracając do UK. Mamy wagę więc będziemy wszystko ważyć przed wyjazdem. Coś czuję że ucierpią na tym zabawki Mayki i to ich będziemy się pozbywać stopniowo aby pozbyć się nadbagażu. Na szczęście Maya ma mnóstwo zabawek które zostały w Chobham więc nie powinna za bardzo płakać ;)
At the moment Piotr goes to play tournaments almost every weekend. He rarely goes to Comics Mart in Mega Mall, but often goes to Comics Corner in Subang Jaya, about 15 min drive from us. Sometimes I take Maya and we drop Peter off at Comics Corner, and then we go shopping or visit an indoor playground. In the evening we pick him up and often go out somewhere for dinner.
Piotr’s collection of cards is so big already that we will definitely be over the limit with the kg allowance when coming back to the UK. We have scales so we will be weighing everything before leaving. I somehow feel that Maya’s toys will suffer because of that and they will be the first to be thrown out, to get rid of the excess weight. Thankfully she has lots and lots of toys waiting for her in Chobham so she shouldn’t cry too much ;)
